05 Jun Things I Don’t Know
Autumn House Press exists because of a love of literature. They don’t care that much about the money. I agree with them. What I have found out recently, however, is that I DO care about the numbers. I care a lot. The reason I care is simple. I wrote a book. I want people to read it.
So how does an author get more people to read her book? To be frank, people won’t read it if they don’t know about it.
A better question is how does an author get more people to KNOW about her book? By promoting, promoting, promoting. It feels like pushing a snowball up hill. But that’s what I’m doing these days. Small, consistent steps each day. Every day. Small. Consistent.
I started thinking about why I pick a certain book up at a bookstore or library. One of the things I notice is if a book has won an award. Two of the books I’m reading right now have won awards. And the pretty gold award stickers are right on the front.
So. Well. My book won an award.
But it’s not ON the book front jacket. So I searched around and found a company called Zazzel that prints round gold stickers. Zazzel has design your own stickers, or Signed by Author stickers. They came in gold or silver, round or oval, small or large.
I went with gold stickers and designed them myself.
I chose small, gold stickers that come 20 per sheet and cost about 30 cents each.
Are they worth it? I don’t know. Will they increase book sales? I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know. I seem to be using that phrase a lot lately.
What I do know is that I like them. And it’s enjoyable to package a book up, slip a bookmark inside, sign it, and then stick a gold sticker on front.
If you a buy a book directly from me … that’s what you can expect. A pretty gold seal. A signed copy. A bookmark.
If nothing else, the stickers make me smile each time I affix one to the cover of my book.
