23 Feb Poets & Writers
Every year I get different literary journals and magazines. I’m not a big subscriber. One or two a year. I want to support literary journals, but frankly, on a writer’s salary, I’m pretty picky about what I choose. I’ve gotten Missouri Review, Gettysburg Review, Creative Nonfiction, Writer’s Chronicle, Image Journal, River Teeth, The Sun. But no matter what I’ve ordered for as long as I can remember I have always gotten Poets & Writers. Every year. I read it cover to cover. It’s my go-to gold standard in the writing industry.
P&W has a section called Recent Winners. This issue, March/April 2015, my name is there. It’s not new news. But the fact that I am there in P & W (Did I tell you how much I love P&W?) IS news. I open the magazine up and read, ” Autumn House Press Literary Prizes: Jill Kandel of Moorhead, Minnesota, won the third annual nonfiction prize for her memoir, So Many Africas: Six Years in a Zambian Village.”
Seeing it there, in P&W is kind of crazy. It makes everything feel real. And today … well, today … I’m just happy.
