New Space

With help from my family over the holidays, my room is all set up. My desk – a metal beauty found on the curb three years ago and restored – was too big to fit through the door into my new studio. My guys to the rescue. They removed the door. And the trim. Well-ah. The desk fit. And nothing got broken!

I’m writing upstairs, with the light of Two Windows! The room’s old tatty carpet is GONE. There’s a lovely scraped, sanded, bleached, washed, oiled hardwood floor beneath my feet. The shelves are up and filled with books. Some art is hanging. I am looking out over a landscape covered in snow. It feels great. Lively. I am part of the world!

New Computer

I took the plunge and bought a Hewlett-Packard Spectre x 360, 2 in 1, intel Core i7. It’s lightweight, sleek, silver, and … well … a whole lot to learn. I’ve been using Windows 7 forever and the new machine is sporting Windows 10. And it’s a touch screen. SO. Spent yesterday watching YouTube tutorials. Not how I love to spend my time, but I want to feel at home with this machine. So. Study time here I come. HP Spectre Computer, Jill Kandel, So Many Africas

New Blog Banners (kind of)

I am  giving this blog a fresh focus on living in-between cultures. Hence, hours spent photographing new banners. I’m going with international stamps from lots of different countries that I’ve lived in. I raided my hubbies stamp collection (yes, I put them ALL back in the right places) and made a Zambian Stamp Banner, an Indonesian Stamp Banner, a Netherlands Stamp Banner … you get it.

Problem is that the banner size isn’t working with the WordPress program. So my lovely banners aren’t quite so lovely. I’m working on it! Here’s what the banner is supposed to look like. Right now it doesn’t. It looks like THIS.  Anybody know the fix?? I was told to make it 1920 x 416. Apparently not.

New Job – The Dog Sitter

The girl – the one who moved out and left me her gorgeous room to move into – got a puppy. I’m now the official puppy sitter until she is able to stay in her kennel alone for a time. Right now she’s all pup. Her name is Bokeh (a photography term) and she’s cute as peaches. And a little energetic. Bokeh, Jill Kandel, So Many Africas

I had to set my Fluffle of Bodacious Bunnies up high so Bokeh wouldn’t devour them when she came to visit last week. Here’s a picture (especially for Sam and Cindee) to prove that the bunnies are safe and sound. They seem to like their new living space. Today I found them on top of my Oxford English Dictionary set. I think they are showing off. The word Bodacious was underlined . What? They think I don’t know what bodacious means? Of course I do. What I don’t know is if they were going for definition 1., 2., or 3. What do you think? Bodacious Bouncing Bunnies, Jill Kandel, So Many AfricasGuess that is enough New/News for now. Wish me luck with the banner thing. Or send me an answer. Either one is appreciated! Off to study some more Windows 10 tutorials.

Jill I’m so glad to see you working on new things! I recently sent by email some pics of my writing space to Michelle. You have a much bigger room than me but the best part is you have more light!

I agree, Diane. The best for me is being up in the light! It makes so much difference.

So happy for you to be in your new space. New studio, new book. It just fits. Is that an art counter to the left? Wondering if you use Picmonkey to make your banner. That’s my go-to and it works every time. Love the new banner, and the fresh focus. Happy writing (and puppy/bunny-sitting.)

I love your new writing space, Jill! Your bodacious bunny photos made me smile. Your daughter’s new puppy is adorable!

Thanks, Heather. I really like the space, too. My bunnies remind me of Cindee and of you and of grace and all the Lake Michigan Writers. They remind me of women who bare burdens and live strong because of them. Live well. And keep on. I love you all!

All your pix are fastastically light-filled, something I don’t automatically attribute to a ND winter — must be those wonderful windows : ). I recently downloaded Windows 10 to my semi-new laptop (also with a touch screen) and I find it very user-friendly — I know you’ll be up to speed very soon. Blessings on you in your new space — as Dori would say, “Just keep writing, just keep writing ….”

North Dakota is actually one of the sunniest states in the U.S. (so I’ve been told) It might be twenty below but the sun is shining and reflecting off the snow. Very bright indeed! I’m making progress on the Windows 10. I might even come to like it! Yup. Keeping on keeping on.
